A famous 1990 Mercedes-Benz commercial told the story of crash survivor Christopher White with the tag line “Engineered like no other car in the world". It became the decade’s most iconic ad, remembered by most South African’s. To educate people on Merc’s Intelligent Drive technology required an advertising approach as ground-breaking as the cars themselves. 30 Years later, Mercedes-Benz revisited the infamous Chapman’s Peak crash. Same treacherous road, same driver behind the wheel - but,… an indescribably different drive.
The film takes viewers through White’s 1988 crash in agonizing detail, breaking footage from the original ad into jagged segments of action, interspersed with White’s first-hand account, along with media footage and other interviews. We then return to the road in a new S-Class for Chris to once again put his life in the hands of the brand that saved him all those years ago, as it drives him autonomously.
